1. Cruising the Chao Phraya River
Exploring the Chao Phraya river by boat is one of Bangkok's greatest pleasures. A commuter ferry—the inexpensive Chao Phraya River Express—makes stops along the river's east bank as far as Nonthaburi. To visit sites on the west bank, however, you'll have to take shuttles across the river at various points. A more leisurely option is to visit the east bank sites by commuter ferry one day, then return to visit the west bank sites by longtail boat the next. Get all of the information about the tour, plus a free map, here.
PHOTO SEMINARS
2. Sign Up for the Denver Photo Seminar
Great travel photography requires a command of several types of photography, including portraits and candids of people, nature/landscapes, festivals/celebrations, and architecture/cityscapes. Join National Geographic Traveler photographers Bob Krist and Ralph Lee Hopkins as they show how to add depth and "local color" to your travel photography by incorporating all of these elements. Simple tricks for using flash to expand when and where you can shoot will also be discussed, as well as how to record audio for multimedia slide shows of your work. The next seminar is on September 27 in Denver, Colorado. Sign up or get Traveler's complete 2009-2010 photo seminar schedule here.
PLACES OF A LIFETIME
3. Discover the World's Most Inspiring Destinations
With Mount Everest in the background, prayer flags flutter in the wind at Nepal's Sagarmatha National Park. The park, encompassing the southern part of the world's highest peak, includes rugged forests, glaciers, Himalayan peaks, and diverse wildlife, such as red pandas and snow leopards. This is one of the sites featured in the special issue of National Geographic Traveler, "50 Places of a Lifetime: The World's Greatest Destinations, Part II." Check out the photo gallery and interactive map and read all about other Places of a Lifetime in the October 2009 issue of Traveler by subscribing here.

Three places occupy the heart of Janet Skeslien Charles’s effervescent debut novel, Moonlight in Odessa. Our principal guide is ambitious, attractive, articulate Daria, who has a degree in mechanical engineering but finds herself, at the beginning of the book, working as a secretary for a demanding Western executive at an international import company. This executive demands that Daria sleep with him, and her strategy to avoid this fate—introducing him to her wily neighbor, Olga—propels a succession of events that reveal some of the primary fantasies and realities of life in Odessa, the U.S., and the metaphorical land of Love.
